Water Resistance: How do I care for my watch for swimming or other activities?Updated a month ago
Let’s clear up a common myth: no watch is truly waterproof. Not ours. Not anyone’s.
Back in the day, watchmakers threw around the term “waterproof” until the Federal Trade Commission shut that down. Now, the real term to know is water-resistant—which means a watch can handle water up to a certain depth and pressure, but it’s not invincible.
Understanding Water Resistance
Water resistance is measured in ATM (atmospheres), which tells you how much pressure a watch can withstand. The higher the number, the deeper you can take it.
COURG, HONNR, VALOR, SCOUT & COURG42 – Built for the Depths
Every Redux & Co. timepiece is engineered with titanium grade 5 cases and 20ATM water resistance (a limited number of COURG were made in titanium grade 2, and are rated to 15ATM), making them tougher than standard watches.
Here’s what that means:
20ATM (200m / 660ft) – Adventure-Ready
Built for action – Handles swimming, surfing, jet skiing, and shallow diving.
Scuba capable – Can withstand underwater pressure, but if you’re diving with helium gas, you’ll want a pro-grade dive watch.
Military-grade toughness – Titanium grade 5 is corrosion-resistant and ultra-lightweight, making it perfect for harsh environments.
Keeping Your Watch Water-Ready
Even the toughest watches need proper care. Follow these steps to keep yours mission-ready:
Before Contact with Water:
✔ Crown check – Always make sure the crown is screwed down tight before getting wet.
✔ Avoid extreme heat – Hot showers, saunas, and hot tubs can weaken the gaskets over time.
After Water Exposure:
✔ Rinse with fresh water – Salt, chlorine, and soap can break down seals.
✔ Dry with a soft cloth – Keeps the case and strap in top shape.
Long-Term Maintenance:
✔ Annual gasket checks – Seals wear out over time; have them inspected yearly if frequently exposed to water.
✔ Never operate the crown while wet – Water can seep inside and compromise the movement.
Push Limits.
Your Redux watch is designed for real-world adventure—from the surf to the skies. Take care of it, and it’ll have your back for years to come.
